Scanning is often the first step in digitization. Datum is well equipped with scanners that can handle many types of media that come in a wide range of sizes, material, weight and age, from full size newspapers, maps, and engineering drawings, to business cards and invoice slips. These state-of-the-art flat-bed and roller scanners from leading manufacturers Konica Minolta, IA Scribe and Fujitsu, combined with supporting equipment and software licensed and developed in-house, enable Datum to deal with jobs of any kind.
Direct scan
Document scanning can be used as a way to digitize physical media. Physical media has the disadvantage of taking up space, being hard to search and retrieve, and being costly and time-consuming to transport over distance. Physical media is also subject to loss and/or damage from fire, flood, insect attack and natural aging which may render it unreadable. Scans, on the other hand, can be economically stored in DVDs, CDs, tapes, as well as in the cloud. Data can be easily and economically stored in multiple copies, locations increasing security. With the help of efficient indexing, database management software and high speed cyber network, information can be easily searched, retrieved and transported fast and securely.
Scanning is often the preparatory first step in a digitization process. Raw media is first scanned at the client's location and electronically transported to Datum for further processing. This not only reduces transit time and moving costs of these media, but also facilitates the ensuing processing work of data contained in these media. Datum will provide clients with on-site assistance to set up the required infrastructure and train and guide operators to do the job professionally. Phone support is available 24/7 and on-site help can be arranged, too.
OCR/ICR scan
This business is what Datum started with in 1996. Over the years, Datum has developed a suite of software programs for fast, accurate optical character recognition (OCR). Combined with modern artificial intelligence technology, Datum has also developed a slew of intelligent character recognition (ICR) technologies to deal with complicated jobs. Not only can text characters in English, Chinese and many other languages be recognized with speed and accuracy, but special characters, sectional separators and original layouts can also be recognized and preserved in the output. Datum's licensed and in-house developed software leads the industry and is the foundation for the company's development and growth.
Datum has scanned more than a hundred newspapers, over a million book titles and countless forms, tables, questionnaires, cards, ballot papers, etc. OCR/ICR is a great way to capture data contained in print media. This greatly cuts down labor costs.
OCR is an excellent tool for data capture. Compared with direct scans, instead of a monolithic picture, all kinds of valuable data and information can be picked out. Those in turn can be used in many ways. The potential value of this work goes far beyond the reduced file size, increased search and retrieval speeds and savings in storage media and space.
Special media (microfilm, microfiche, X-Ray images, engineering drawings, etc.)
Information contained in microfilms, microfiche, X-Ray images requires special equipment for scanning. Special software is also required for capturing information contained in these media. Engineering drawings can be turned into vector graphs which can then be reused without loss of resolution.
